E per ben due volte: la prima dal traghetto di linea che ci ha condotti ad Iraklion e la seconda dal kayak alla fine della prima giornata di pagaiata!
Anzi, della prima MEZZA giornata, perché riusciamo a prendere il mare solo alle 4 del pomeriggio, dopo aver passato due ore sullo scivolo del porticciolo turistico ad attrezzare i kayak di tutto punto e dopo avere buttato altre tre ore alla ricerca di una connessione internet affidabile ed economica… vi risparmiamo le traversie (e le imprecazioni di Mauro), ma grazie alla gentilezza dei commessi del negozio siamo venuti a capo di ogni problema informatico e ora possiamo postare tranquillamente seduti in riva al mare, al suono delle cicale che sembra sincronizzato col frangere delle onde sulla battigia… ah, la solitudine, il silenzio, l’oscurità: la libertà tipica di un viaggio in kayak!
Abbiamo percorso solo 18 km e la prima ora l’abbiamo impiegata per uscire dal porto, tanto era lunga la diga foranea! Poi un mastodontico stadio di cemento a chiudere la periferia del capoluogo cretese ed una centrale termoelettrica poco oltre con i tanti serbatoi dipinti a greche colorate di azzurro e arancio… insomma, un panorama poco invitante, ma tante onde spumeggianti al traverso, molti pesci voltanti sulla nostra rotta ed una decisa brezza contraria che rende lento il nostro incedere ma che al tramonto diventa calda quasi quanto l’acqua del mare!
Abbiamo montato la tenda in un angolo riparato di una spiaggia occupata da pescatori locali e dalle loro capanne dotate di ogni comfort, dai pensili della cucina sospesi sotto le tettorie alle amache tese tra i pini marittimi… la matrona ci ha salutato da lontano in italiano con un “bravi, bravi” che ci ha fatto intendere di essere stati accettati nella piccola comunità marinara… sarà una notte da sogno!

We finally landed on Crete! Twice: the first time from the ferry from Athen to Iraklion and the second time from the kayak at the end of the first day paddling!
Rather, of the first Half day paddling, because we succeed in taking the sea at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, after having spent two hours on the slide of the tourist dock to equip the kayaks and after having waste other three hours to find an internet connection... we avoid you the problems (and Mauro cusses): thanks to the gentleness of the salesclerks of the shop we resolve every computer problems and we can now post quietly sat near the sea, with the sound of the crickets that seems syncronized with to break of the waves... ah, the loneliness, the silence, the obscurity: the tipical freedom of a sea kayak trip!
We have paddled only for 9 miles and we employed one hour to go out to the horbour, so much long is the offshore embankment! Then a mastodontic stadium at the end of the city and a thermoelettric central with so many colored tanks with Greek frets on blue and orange... in short, not an inviting panorama but so many foamy waves, many flying fishes and a contrary breeze that makes we slow but that becomes as warm as the sea water on the sunset!
We have put the tent in a sheltered beach occupied by local fishermen and with every comfort, the kitchen suspended under the canopies and the hammocks among the maritime pines... the matron has greeted us in Italian with a "bravo, bravo" to explain us that we have been approved in the small community. It will be a perfect night!
