E’ cominciato lo studio matto e disperatissimo sulle carte nautiche e sulle guide turistiche.
Anzi, va avanti già da qualche settimana: mentre Mauro si diletta a trasferire sul GPS tutti i possibili punti di sbarco ricavati dall'analisi incrociata delle carte nautiche e delle mappe satellitare, io mi sto dedicando a spulciare le guide turistiche per raccogliere tutte le possibili indicazioni utili al viaggio.
E’ un po’ deludente constatare quanto tutte le informazioni turistiche vengano date per visitare la terra DA TERRA, neanche i portolani sembrano tenere conto dell’opposta prospettiva di viaggio che hanno i naviganti, che invece vedono il mondo DAL MARE.
Così ogni cosa va analizzata al contrario: se per esempio la guida dice che c'è una spiaggia attrezzata, sarà per noi certamente difficile sbarcare tra sdraio e ombrelloni; se la carta dice che la strada costiera è sterrata allora forse non troveremo stabilimenti balneari; se invece la località turistica è rinomata allora sarà anche ricca di locali notturni, decisamente poco indicati per trascorrere in tenda una notte tranquilla… and so on.
Avendo a disposizione 5 settimane per coprire gli oltre 1000 km di sviluppo costiero dell'isola, abbiamo calcolato di dover percorrere almeno 30-35 km al giorno, così da avere anche qualche giorno di margine in caso di cattivo tempo; dobbiamo quindi capire se è davvero possibile montare il campo notturno ogni 30 km, oltre a sbarcare per la pausa pranzo o per la merenda o per i rifornimenti, oppure se in caso di necessità ci sono lungo costa punti di fuga o luoghi riparati...
Insomma, lunghe ore di letture dedicate alla valutazione delle informazioni raccolte e alla trascrizione sulla carta delle notizie curiose: chissà se la marina di Paleohora da 200 posti barca in costruzione tempo fa è stata nel frattempo terminata? Ci sarà ancora spiaggia rosa sull'isolotto di Elafonissi? E la rada di Kissamos riparata per le vele sarà adatta anche per i nostri kayak?
E’ quasi un viaggio PRIMA del viaggio ed è forse uno dei momenti più emozionanti…

It is beginning the crazy and desperate study on the nautical maps and on the tourist guides.
Really, it has already been going on for a few weeks: while Mauro transfers on the GPS all the possible places to land, find out by the cross analysis of nautical and google maps, I'm devoting myself to reed the tourist guides to pick up all the useful indications for the trip.
I'm disappointed, because all the tourist informations are given for visiting the world from the land, and they don't keep in mind the opposite perspective of a sea trip, when the traveller discovers the world from the sea. So every thing must be analyzed contrarily: for example, if the guide says there is a beach, it will certainly be difficult for us to land there, among sun ombrellas and deckchairs; if it says there is a dirt road along the coast, maybe there we won't find a beach resort; instead, if there is a touristis place, then it will be decidedly difficult spend there a relaxing night; and so on.
Having 5 weeks available to cover the 500 miles coastline of the island, we've calculated to paddle at least 15-18 miles a day, to also have few free days in case of bad weather; we owe therefore to understand if it is possible to put the tent every 15 miles indeed, besides landing for the break lunch or for the snack or for the restocking, or if it is simple to find a sheltered area in case of necessity.
In short, long time of readings, devoted to the evaluation of the picked informations and the transcription on the paper of the curious news: who knows if the new Paleochora harbour with 200 boat places is now finished? It still be a pink beach on the islet of Elafonissi? And will be the Kissamos bay, mended for the sails, also available for our kayaks?
It is almost a trip before the trip, and it is maybe one of the most exciting moments.
