Non è il nostro primo viaggio in kayak, ma ogni volta è come se lo fosse: siamo emozionati come due ragazzini, anche se abbiamo 98 anni in due! Andiamo in kayak da molto tempo, siamo "navigati", abbiamo due vecchi kayak come noi, sempre pronti a solcare nuovi mari: silenziosi e sicuri, i kayak navigano lenti lungo costa ed offrono una prospettiva nuova per chi ama visitare la terra dal mare.
Il nostro viaggio a Creta ha ottenuto anche un prestigioso riconoscimento: una medaglia di bronzo del Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano, che ha così voluto conferire una premio di rappresentanza alla lunga spedizione marinara... del resto, siamo ancora un popolo di navigatori! Anche se i nostri amici romani hanno subito cominciato a scherzarci sopra: "ma come, ve danno 'na medaja prima de raggiunge er traguardo?!"
Totalmente indipendenti e ben equipaggiati, dotati dell'attrezzatura necessaria per il campeggio nautico e per la navigazione in sicurezza, cercheremo di completare il periplo di Creta mantenendo un'andatura turistica di circa 30 km al giorno, in ragione delle condizioni meteorologiche, facendo rifornimento di acqua e viveri lungo il percorso e procedendo con la sola propulsione della pagaia: un viaggio tutto ad energia umana!
Ci siamo presi 5 settimane di ferie per esplorare i 1046 km di costa cretese, la quinta isola più grande del Mediterraneo, culla della civiltà minoica e ponte ideale tra Oriente, Africa ed Occidente: più che un'isola, un continente, gridano le guide turistiche quasi all'unisono… Partiamo soli, quasi in luna di miele, ma sappiamo che in ogni porticciolo troveremo pescatori e ragazzini pieni di curiosità: Da dove venite? Dove andate? E dall'immancabile sguardo stupito quando comprendono che il kayak è tutta la nostra casa! Partiremo il 30 luglio e anche se mancano ancora (o soltanto?) due settimane, siamo entrati nel vivo dei preparativi, quando ogni cosa deve ancora andare al suo posto e tutto deve ancora cominciare.

It is not our first sea kayak trip, but every time is like it were: we're excited as well as two little guys, even if we're 98 years old both! We've been kayaking for a long time, we are "navigated", we always have two kayaks as old as we are and always ready to new sdventures: silent and sure, kayaks sail slowly along the coast and offer a new perspective for the people who loves to visit the earth from the sea.
Our trip to Crete has also received a prestigious recognition: a bronze medal of the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano, who has so confered a representative prize for the long sea experience... above all, Italians are still a people of navigators! Even if our Roman friends have immediately started to joke with the medal: "how can they give you a medal if you don't yet reach the finishing line?!"
Totally independent and well equipped, endowed for nautical camping and safaty navigation, we will try to complete the Crete periplus, maintaining a tourist paddling of around 15 miles a day, dependant of the meteorological conditions, making restocking of water and food along the coast and proceeding with the only propulsion of the paddles: a trip all realized with human energy!
Five weeks of holidays to explore the 500 miles coastline of Crete, the fifth greatest island of the Mediterranean, cradle of the minoic civilization and an ideal bridge among Asia, Africa and Europe: more than an island, it is a continent, shouts in unison almost the tourist guides.
We start alone, like in a honeymoon, but we know that in every dock we will find fishermen and little boys full of curiosity: Where do you come from? Where do you go? And inevitable surprised when they understand that the kayak is our house at all!
We will start on July the 30th and even if we have still (or only?) two weeks, we're coming into the preparations, when each thing still has to go into its place and everything still has to start.
