MMS: Limani Hersonissou - IRAKLION!!!

Last day of sea kayak navigation, last start, last paddling.
Crete has wanted to leave us with the memory of its true soul, still sending us its messenger: the Meltemi!
We always paddle with contrary wind between 15 and 20 knots.
The sea has contrast us but it has had the big merit to stop all the aquatic games; the rhombus of the wind has reduced the irritating noise of the animation of the tourist villages.
5-3-1 n.m. and then we finally reach the great harbour of Iraklion: just here you can pass in kayak among oil-tankers, freighters, ferries and tows in manoeuvre!
It is so beautiful to land on the same ramp from which we have started 30 days ago!
And the water to wash humans and equipments is free for sailors!
Two abundant hours to void the kayaks and to place every thing in the car, that has attended us for a long time in the port car parking.
Tired but happy to have completed the tour in the expected times, we celebrate the end of the expedition in a local kantina...

MMS: Mironikitas - Limani Hersonissou

Today is our next to last day: 11 n.m. of wild coasts and more than 8 n.m. of lodge, lodge, lodge!
We suffer again the big warm and finally understand that in Crete the wind is essential to survive to the African temperatures!
The lunch break in the last idyllic little bay is disturbed by a horde of quads, noisy and dusty...
Than we paddle both disgusted by the sewages floating near beaches with blue flags (!?!) and suffocated by the bad smell of the various aquatic games... that uninterruptedly follow us up to Limani Hersonissou.
We land in the nighttime between the thousand lights of restaurants and discos and we immediately feel there like "two fishes out of water": we hope to sleep on the sunbed of the resort.

We vain look for an internet point and we shelter in the most distant tavern from the crowded waterfront...

MMS: Spinalonga - Mironikitas

Yesterday 11 n.m. from the island of Spinalonga to the village of Mironikitas, just over the last head before Iraklion.
The weather forecast confirms the absence of wind and our destination so near infuse us calm and slowness, so much that we take a biblical times to prepare the kayaks: we finally start paddle at 13.30!
We have a break to the shade of the Venetian Fortress became a leper colony up to 1957 and than we have a slow paddle over the head, to the indolent rhythm of the numerous modern windmills.
We rouse a steep beach of white pebbles as big as ostrich's eggs and a small terrace on the sea built in stone around a twisted tree.
The wallpainting of a "Greek tavern" attracts us like bees on the honey, so we climb the hill; it is closed, but the old Kostas offers us meat of sheep, raki and melon and tells us the story of his life: he is a retired commander of oil-tankers and a farmer for passion, with 3 children that give him a lot of problems and 5 nephews that usually splash in the big tub for the fermentation of the raki, everything in a mix of Greek-Russian-Spanish languages.

Dream night!

MMS: Papadiokambos - Spinalonga

Ieri previsioni confermate: finalmente mare mosso!

Yesterday weather forecast confirmed: finally moved sea!
After so many days of binding navigation, a sea 3 seem us like a calm sea!
We wake up at 6 o'clock to recover, excellent lunch in the beautiful village of Mochlos and afternoon paddle in the gulf of Agios Nicolaos, with the wind pushsing us along the coast.
The dense blanket of haze doesn't allow us of appreciate the beauty of the landscape and saves us form the ugliness of the buildings of the city, few hospitable with two kayakers: all the beaches are busy from mega-hotels and discos.
After 2 weeks of idyllic life in the nature, it is an abrupt return to the civilization: so we continue up to the dusk and we land after more than 25 n.m. on the Spinalonga island, hoping it is saved by the crazy assault of the tourism.
A beautiful desert beach of rosy sand entertains us for the night and a concert of crickets it welcomes us under the trees: the most suggestive night, with sight on a red moon and a red sunrise on the sea!
